A Study On The Public Sign From The Regional Culture

As the external language of environment, the public sign constitutes not only the media of surroundings and also an important part in visual surroundings. Along with the expansion of city, daily growing of living standard and opening up of city, environment sign does not limit itself to the direction and representation of information, but extents to signify the city image and regional culture. The system of public environment sign, as a special language, while directing space order and spreading information, plays an effective role in constructing the city image and cultural atmosphere, and becomes one charming system to display regional cultural characteristics and to popularize a city.The soul of public environment sign lies in creation, which means that as a specific culture, the public sign is the crystallization of the image and history of a city. A national culture may come into being through thousands of years' accumulation. And so is a regional one. It is a meaningful subject and also the direction of public sign design to apply the essence of a regional culture in the public sign.Culture is the source for creation in design. Nanchang, an ancient city with a long-stretching history of over tow thousand years in Jiangxi Province, has a rich resources of regional culture. From the perspective of regional culture, this dissertation makes an analysis of the current situation of public sign in Nanchang. On the basis of the relationship between public sign and regional environment, it makes a conclusion on the principles and methods for public sign design in terms of its primary factors. It is advocated to realize the cultural connotation in public sign besides information popularization.
