On Xueneng

Xue Neng was a characteristic poet in the late Tang and even Tang Dynasty. Based on the studies of his existing poetries and some related literature works,this paper researches his life and writings,dissects his thoughts and poetic art,analyzes the origin and evaluation of his works so as to display Xue Neng in an all-round and systematic way.The paper consists of the following main four chapters.First chapter,it introduces some information about Xue Neng'life and the spread of his works,including the date of his birth and death,the native place,the life experience,the making friends and the spread of his writings.About Xue Neng's birth-date,this paper does not give such an answer of the year A.D817 that other works have mentioned.But according to the fact of his early experience as an attendant,the paper gets more accurate answer of the year A.D815 or much earlier with the analysis of the rituals and customs in Tang Dynasty.At the same time,the article concludes that his native place is more likely in Pu Zhou,Shan Xi province rather than in the so-called Fen Zhou,Shan Xi province through the research of his poetries.Moreover,it put forwards proof for the concrete time of his term of commander-in-chief influence C Xu Zhou)during his official career.Second chapter,it dissects Xue Neng thoughts.The article analyzes the Buddhist thoughts with the centre on the Confucian thoughts and also summarizes the Confucianism.It especially makes a further detailed analysis about his arrogant and pretentious literature thoughts and the reasons for the poems.Third chapter,Xue Neng's poetic creation.With the arrangement and research on his existing writings,the article thinks that the theme of his poetries can be mainly divided into three kinds,such as the topic of expressing feelings,treating with courtesy,singing the praises and so on;the paper makes a summary to Xue Neng's poetic art and gets two main points:One is that the vigorous style coexists with the ease side.This is the manifestation of Buddhist thoughts with the centre on Confucianism.Through the method of comparison,the article makes the contrast between Du Fu and Du Mu whose poem styles have deep origin with Xue Neng's.As the same poetic vigorous style,then Xue Neng and Du Fu get different states and the personality spirit.Xue Neng is the eldest child sighed with sadness for individual and indulges himself in the common custom sentiment.Although Du Fu wanders in destitute difficulties,he is still in this dynasty.Therefore he is good at describing current events with profound sentences and his loyalty and patriotism is eternally sent out in his poems.The other is to ask neat and orderly.Xue Neng asks mainly to focus on the poetry manifestation,but not to from content transformation and enrichment obtaining,therefore,it transforms the late Tang poems with not obvious results.But relatively all the poems in the late Tang decline mostly and have weak standard.Xue Neng can be regarded as a special poet at that period.Fouth chapter,Xue Neng's poetic evaluation and origin.As for the origin of his poetry,the paper gets an interesting phenomenon in the research:all those whose poetries are declared arrogantly by Xue Neng(for example Li Bai,Du Fu,Bai Juyi,Liu Yuxiand so on)are to be inferior to his own poems,which is exactly the origin of his poetry.When as for its evaluation,Xue Neng is famous for his poems in the late Tang; but the people in the Song dynasty have different evaluation to his writings;he especially receives affirming during Yuan and Ming period;the Qing person hold a harsh attitude.
