A Study On Culture Teaching In College English Teaching

The development of language teaching theory, the ever-increasing requirement of intercultural communication and the rapid process of globalization show that the ultimate goal of English teaching is to cultivate students' intercultural communicative competence (short for ICC hereafter) with English language. Therefore, English teaching should not only emphasize the training of students' basic linguistic skills but also should put these skills into the context of its culture so that the students can acquire ICC.In recent years, how to cultivate students' cultural awareness so as to develop their cultural communicative competence has become a most important project in the reformation of college English teaching in China:. A lot of experts, scholars and teachers have paid special attention to these researches and have published related works and articles, which form the basic systems concerned with the study of intercultural communication. While how to develop college students' cultural awareness so as to improve their ICC is still a field which is worth further studying.This thesis analyzes the importance of culture teaching in college English teaching (short for CET hereafter) on the basis of theory of relationship between language and culture, theory of ICC and theory of ideal personality. It points out the content and prerequisites of culture teaching in CET. The author also proposes some feasible strategies for college English teachers to adopt both at curricular and at extracurricular time. Then the author proves that the strategies proposed are feasible and effective in cultivating college students' cultural awareness and in improving their ICC through an experiment about culture teaching in CET. And the author also hopes that culture teaching in CET can be promoted by college English teachers' proper use of these strategies.
