As a cultural conservative, Gu Hongming is viewed as an "exclusive thinker who hates western civilizations". It is real that he praised or supported such "dregs" like bound feet and plaits. The problem is. why this foreign.doctorwith 13 doctor's degrees, who had received regular western education and been familiar with western learning and foreign languages, became so extremely conservative or deviated from the mainstream cultures in China? Can his thoughts on cultural conservatism only be thrown into the ash bin of history or be a typical case when we criticize feudal ethics. The author places him on the tragic stage of modern China and has a detailed, in-depth research on his view of cultural conservatism by analysis, comparison and induction in order to restore his real face. The thesis is divided into six parts. Part One is the introduction about the advancement of Gu Hongming's thoughts of cultural conservatism and the researches before him. Part Two explains the formation of his view from the European romanticism, conservative thoughts, family enlightenment education, the knot of being an overseas Chinese, the specific historical period and personal temperament and experiences. Part Three tells the main ideas of his view from his cultural view, comparison between Chinese and western civilization and the opinion of Chinese and western cultural combination. Part Four reveals Gu's view is patriotic, which does not exclude or worship western civilization. It is critical and a conservative, radical entity. Part Five evaluates his view and explains that his view criticizes modern western culture only from the traditional position and that it does not comb or develop the traditions from a modern position. The view is therefore difficult to have an original, critical spirit and a fair attitude toward the comparison between Chinese and western cultures. Part Six is the conclusion, which generally reviews Gu Hongming and his unique status in the cultural communcications between China and western countries. The author thinks that his conservative cultural view still focuses on social realities, emphasizes social orders, protects traditions and calls for values of human relations. His view can still arouse our reflection on the present society as well as ourselves and we can get some enlightenment and draw lessons from it. It is where the practical meaning of our research on Gu's cultural conservatism lies.
