Hu Shih As An Example To Explore Modern Research On History Of Chinese Philosophy

In the recent years,there have been so many researches on Hu Shih,those researches has extended to almost every aspect of Hu Shih'studies.However,those researches on Hu Shih are mainly for lifetime achievement Hu Shih's overall research,failed to highlight his research into Chinese philosophy in modern Chinese academic background.In those researches into the study of Chinese philosophy conducted by Hu Shih, Hu Shih's Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy is always on the hot issues,but fewer noted that Hu Shih'concern for logic is the major characteristic of the system formed by Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy and A Study of the Development of Logical Method in Ancient China.For Hu Shih's other books on the history of Chinese philosophy,Tai Tung-yuan's Philosophy and History of Thought in Medieval China,very few is aware of link between these late works and Hu Shih's early writings,few is concern about the changes in those methods Hu Shih adopted in the research into history of Chinese philosophy.This thesis will focus on this aspect and explore from this.This thesis attempts to study into Hu Shih' research methods on the history of Chinese philosophy through his books,to focus on the specific books of Hu Shih rather than the whole lifetime research made by Hu,to devide Hu Shih's research on history of Chinese ancient philosophy into two parts,and mark the two academic transformations,the first was marked by Tai Tung-yuan's Philosophy,compared to A Study of the Development of Logical Method in Ancient China and Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy,which two focused so much on logic;the second was marked by History of Thought in Medieval China,compared to those earlier books,Hu Shih even changed the name of his book from History of Chinese Philosophy to History of Thought.This thesis hope to explore the changes in Hu Shih's research methods on history of Chinese philosophy,then to clear the new paradigm established by Hu Shih,in the background of China's modern academic transformation after all the analysis of these two research transformations,And hope that from this we can get a further insight into the academic transformation in modern China.
