On The Film Characteristics In Xia Yan's Drama Writings

Xia Yan acquired brilliant achievements both in dramas and screenplays. In order to fully understand Xia Yan's career as a writer, it is important for us to probe into the correlation between his creative writings of dramas and screenplays. Although some scholars already mentioned that Xia Yan's dramas are characteristic for the features of films, this topic is still lack of in-depth discussion. The aim of this thesis is to study the picturization of Xia Yan's dramas and the significance of this feature.In order to discuss the film features in Xia Yan's dramas, this thesis is divided into three parts. In the first two chapters of the thesis, the author analyses the film narration and the film techniques of Xia Yan's dramas through the close readings of the texts. The author of the thesis thinks that Xia Yan used the narrative techniques of screenplays to a high degree in his dramas and broke many traditional aspects of the drama writing; therefore, his dramas got a unique expressive force, and formed the phenomenon of picturization of dramatic narration. The extensive use of such techniques as close-up, fixed shot, flashback and montage in Xia Yan's dramas, is a sort of challenge and renovation to the two thousand years of the drama tradition, and it did breathe new life into the drama.In the third chapter of the thesis, the author emphasizes the cause of formation of the picturization of Xia Yan's dramas. The author of the thesis considers that the social factor and personality are the two kinds of causes. The social factor made Xia Yan abandon the screenplays, and his own personality determined him to introduce the film factors into his drama writings. The profound accomplishments of the film theory, the skilled film techniques, and the specific setting of region influence his drama writing deeply and caused his drams full of deep intense film complex.So, it is obvious that Xia Yan consciously inducted the film techniques into his dramas, and formed the tendency of film narration and film characteristics, and in this way he tried to fulfill the unrealized film dreams in his drama writings.
