The Research Of Composing Techniques Used In Piano Suite〈Xi-lake Photo Set〉

The piano suite "Xi-Lake photo set" is composted by 5 chapters: "Liu Lang Wen Ying", "Huang Gang Guan Yu", "Nan Ping Wan Zhong", "Hu Pao Meng Quan" and "Su Di Chun Xiao". The piece is the tentative work by the national composer Mo Fan in 1985. In 1980s, China is at the initial time for the reformation and opening, and many western modern composing concepts, technologies and methods are introduced into the country. A group of young composers were trying to combine those incoming knowledge and our traditional folk elements, and promote the music creation into a exploration and practice time of the trendy music. Therefore the work at that time is valued for research in term of the tone element , complex materials organization, as long as the musical concept.This paper is constructed at four aspects: first, we analyze the musical form. Each chapter in the suite shows the ternary form principle. They have individual onefold theme for development. Second, we analyze the tone materials and the method of theme development. In this part, we'll discuss the tone material, scale type, and the related technologies of music theme development. The organized tone materials are rich with half-tone at certain degree, even in the music progression. Meanwhile, melodic progression maintains the traditional folk characteristics, accompany with both novelty and kindness. The composer shows the clear character on the scale type usage: in the work for China geography and culture exhibition, he used diatonicism and special six-tone scale, bringing the sense of both traditional and modern style. In the aspect of theme statement and development, the composer takes the skills of variational three-tone frame and theme, symmetry, and sequence, and hence makes the music line having sufficient development and evolution. The third, the analysis is performed for mode and tonality. The work is also characterized on the layout of key arrangement. The key types through the whole piece are not uniformed and the tonality is more wandering while polytonality is applied from time to time. The last part we implement scale set, the new music analysis methodology in twenty century, for the folk style embedded creative piece. This paper analyzes the work in terms of both theme statement and the development path and the complex tone structure while highlighting the inner structure in the music.Through above analysis, we expect having in-depth unsterstanding in the content of the piece, learning the composing characteristics how to combine the traditional music materials and western music creation technologies in China newer music creation during the tentative period.
