| Translator is the most dynamic factor in translation. However, in traditional studies, s/he is just like an invisible man and his/her subjective dynamics has not gained due recognition. After the "cultural turn", translator's inferior status is promoted to a great extent and scholars have shed new light on the style of distinguished translators.Systems philosophy is a unique approach to problem solving. With the wholeness as basic feature, it proposes to view systems in a holistic manner. Meanwhile, it emphasizes individualistic diversity and the harmonious relationship between different systems, which provides the theoretical basis for the existence of the translator's style.Gao Jian is a master translator among the few who received traditional Chinese education as well as modern western instructions. His achievements in translation are considered as a great contribution to the Chinese translation circle. However, studies upon his translation are rare.Based on systems philosophy, this thesis conducts a case study on Gao Jian's E-C translation, investigating his style by means of contrastive study. Generally speaking, the style of translator is perceivable in two cases: firstly, when the translator's style is similar to the original, s/he makes efforts to infinitely approach to the original style; secondly, when the translator's style is distinct from the original, s/he employs various translating techniques in reproducing the artistic value of the original with his/her own features. The characteristics of Gao Jian's translation lie in infinite approach to the original style both in form and in spirit, combination of classical Chinese and mandarin and the flexible sentence structure. With the guidance of systems philosophy, this thesis rethinks of the relationship between translator's style and original style, testifying that the visibility of translator's style is inevitable. The style of TT is generally a combination of the original style and the translator's style. As a synthetic philosophy of the time, systems philosophy contributes a lot to the scientific positioning of translator's status and the nature of translation. Only by doing so can translation community cast away the traditional author's-style oriented theories and liberate translator's creativity, so as to raise translator's position and provide translation the deserved affirmation and respect. |
