A Study On The Effect Of Using English Newspapers As Extensive Reading Materials For English College Students

As a supplementary way to intensive reading, extensive reading can stimulate students' reading interest, enlarge and reinforce their vocabulary, improve reading speed, help students to cultivate good reading habit and comprehend more cultural background knowledge about western countries. Additionally, it is an essential way to improve students' integrated reading skills. It requires that reading should be extensive, abundant and fast. According to its importance and characters, selecting extensive reading materials plays an important role in extensive reading effect.This study concerns the effect on reading English newspapers as extensive reading materials. The extensive reading teaching expriment carried out in Jingchu Technical College lasted four months. By questionnaire and experiment research, the study proves the possibility of improving reading scores by reading English newspapers as extensive reading materials for English college students.The study contributes to the literature on English reading and provides teachers with some insights on selecting and evaluating extensive reading materials. Meanwhile, it also makes references to enrich college English students' extensive reading classroom teaching forms.
