Initial Assessment Of Internet Symbols Affective Valence

Objective:Investigating the emotional meaning of internet symbols,assessing each symbol's affective valence,the aim is standardizing affective stimuli materials,riching standardized affective stimuli materials and facilitating emotion experiment study.Methods:The collected internet symbols come from China Internet Dictionary which is compiled by Yu Genyuan and the symbol chapter of the book Internet Pop Wind-Internet Chat Word Magical Function.There are 558 symbols in all.At first,investigating the degree of familiarity,identical and emotion meaning in more than 600 university students,retaining 316 symbols which have higher degree in three dimesions.Then,investigating the emotional meaning of internet symbols from three dimesions-valence,arousal and dominance with 9 points scale,the subjects are 660 students of HuNan finance and economics advanced vocational school.The results are analyzed by the methods of factor analysis,classify analysis,correlation analysis and so on.Results:The results of Factor analysis show,Bartlett test value is 656.490,p(Sig.=0.000)＜0.05,and KMO test value is 0.678.One component is extracted by the Principal Component Analysis method,the accumulative rate of extraction sums of squared loadings is 82.884%.The communalities is that valence is 0.909;arousal is 0.835and dominance is 0.263.Therefore,the results of valence and arousal are got to be futher analysis.Collecting the information of valence and arousal results,the internet symbols are classified into 4 classes,each class has different grade in each dimesion:①valence(3.48)arousal(3.72)②valence(6.24) arousal(5.33)③valence(4.22)arousal(4.26)④valence(5.09)arousal (4.75). Conclusion:Internet symbols have emotional meaning,their effective valence can be assessed.Internet symbols effective valence assessment can be assessed better from valence and arousal,which shows valence and arousal are the main dimesions of emotion.The internet symbols which have emotional meanings partly match with the basic emotion types such as sad,pleasantly surprised,fear,pleasure and so on.
