| Hu Linyi was one of the central figures of Xiang Army, a outstanding practical reformer of landlord class and a representitive figure of Jingshi Pai in modern China. Although he participated in suppressing the peasantry uprising of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and ought to be denounced, he dared to face the decadent military institution and took a military reform when the Qing Dynasty was in a precarious period, and took shape his own military thoughts. He drew lessons from Qi Jiguang's of Ming Dynasty military thoughts and his contemporary Zeng Guofan's expericence of excercising soldiers and created his own military-building thoughts, military-managing thoughts, strategic thoughts, tactical thoughts and Tuanlian thoughts. His military thoughts gradully created and developed in practices and was suitale to the necessities of military fights, and had remarkable features of times and had very important influence on the history of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom and Xiang Army, therefore, it have important scholarly meanings for the study on the Xiang Army and Hu-xiang Culture. At the same time, some oppinions in his military thoughts about military official-selecting, soldiers-selecting, managing military with peace and tactical co-operation still contain some reasonable elements even in 21st century nowadays and deserve our apprecitaion and learning. Thus, the study on Hu Linyi's military thoughts has imprtant academic meaning. Some scholars in the academic circle have had some study on this question at the present, but their study is not systematic, complete and profound. This paper want to sbsorb the present academic achievements and make a systematic inspection on Hu Linyi's military thoughts on the basis of adopting primitive materials, and provide us with a relatively complete knowledge on the total appearance of Hu Linyi's military thoughts.
