The Study On The Phenomenon Of Overlapping Chinese Action Verbs

This dissertation mainly deals with the phenomenon of overlapping action verbs by a set of special words in modern Chinese, such as"VXVY"or"XVYV", whose meaning and functions fixed with the whole construction and this set of special words"X……Y"are focused in this paper. The whole dissertation is divided into five chapters besides the preface and the conclusion.The preface mainly discusses the relative current study situations and the theories upon which the thesis rests by this paper, besides the resources of the sentences in the paper were introduced hereby.Chapter 1 demonstrates the phenomenon of overlapping action verbs by a set of particular words according to a great number of this kind of particular syntactic phenomenon in modern Chinese. It defines it and separates it from some phrases abbreviated which have the same forms. The chapter also analyzes its pragmatic functions and pragmatic values.Chapter 2 discusses the fundamental syntactic meaning of the whole of forms, and it is thought to be a type of particular construction and has its own construction meaning of happening frequently or going on. Due to this construction meaning, it leads to several additional pragmatic meaning in communication.Chapter 3 classifies those functions of the sets of special words and gives some factors which maybe influences theirs functions. 3.1 mainly discusses the functions of the set of caused-motion words; 3.2 mainly discusses the functions of the set of localizers and demonstrative pronouns; 3.3 mainly discusses the influencing factors the sets of special words.Chapter 4 further analyzes their tenses characteristics of the whole forms based on the studies of last several chapters. We think the form has the characteristics of finishing and lasting, which are the characteristics of iterative tense. It is one of the forms of iterative tense in modern Chinese.Chapter 5 mainly studies their syntactic distributions and syntactic functions. It commonly can not be predicated singly in one sentence, except that it is accompanied with some locality phrases,or time phrases or frequency phrases. Otherwise its subject or object can conclude many subjects in reality. Besides it can be placed as attribute, adverbial, or other adjuncts.Finally is the conclusion.
