Most ancient Chinese buildings and other scenic or historic spots, such as palaces, aristocratic residences, mountain passes, fortresses, gardens, mausoleums, ancestral shrines, altars, temples and shops, are marked with engraved plaques showing the names of the sites or commendatory words. Such decorations are unique in China. The plaques have a long tradition, starting with the Qin and Han Dynasties and continuing until the present.Plaques are an inseparable part of the Chinese political and cultural life. Almost every important event was recorded on plaques, such as the recognition of glorious deeds and achievements and the inauguration of a business. On such occasions, grand ceremonies culminate in plaque hangings. The social history and fashions of their times crystallize into historic plaques, which have their stories to tell.Written mostly by philosophers and calligraphers, the words on plaques are succinct, dignified, artistically appealing and profoundly enlightening. Plaques about glorious deeds and achievements give rise to admiration and urge people to model themselves on the commemorated heroes. Those plaques that foretell happiness and prosperity make people look forward to brilliant prospects with boundless hope. Those propagating official ideals shed light on the essence of life. Those expounding philosophical ideas illuminate minds in darkness. Short as they are, these plagues represent the best of Chinese literature, condensing poetic beauty within a few characters. Many inscriptions on plaques were the works of master calligraphers. of different times. So plaques also showcase calligraphy masterpieces.
