Using the method of Signal Detection Theory, 50 traffic signs which are part of GB5768-1999 were investigated. The research was designed to explore: (1)The effect of traffic signs' show time on their recognition performance; (2) The effect of traffic signs' brightness on their recognition performance.32 subjects participated in the experiment. The result is below.Firstly, there were significant differences in recognition performance due to the show time of traffic signs, and the long show time caused better performance compared to the short show time.Secondly, there were significant differences in recognition performance due to brightness of traffic signs, and the brighter the better performance.Thirdly, there were significant differences in recognition performance due to the category of traffic signs, the warning signs' performance was better than the prohibition signs' , and the prohibition signs' performance was better than the directive signs' .Finally, the city subjects' performance was better than the countryside subjects' .
