Du Jun (1611-1687), his courtesy name is Yu Huang, and assumed name is Cha Cun. He was born in Huanggang, Huguang Province. Du Jun was a famous poet during the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. He was famous for his bold and unconstrained writing style. Meanwhile, he was an important critic of Li Yu's opera and novel. He is worth of studying. Du Jun led a frustrated living but he stuck to his integrity all his life. He was arrogant and upright. He had unique ideological character and literary achievement. But few people have studied him. In fact Du Jun made great contribution to poetry, prose, opera and novel comment. His poetry was full of the color of former dynasty and worries about his country and people. His poetry was featured with era character and movingly artistic skill. His poetry theory was a combination of traditional view and his own character. His poetry theory and works supported each other. He commented the function, artistic character and skills of poetry and novel. Although his achievement was not so great as that of Jin Shengtan, he differed from Jin Shengtan. Jin Shengtan commented traditional classics but Du Jun commented current works. So his comment was in connection with era and reality. And his comment affected writing more directly. Also we should attach importance to his research of tragedy. We can't ignore Du Jun when we study literature and literary theory of late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty. This paper introduces Du Jun's life experience, traveling, poetry theory and writing, comments on opera and novel. It gives brief account of main features of Du Jun and his works, and judges his literary achievement objectively.
