The syntactic analysis of "V1+N1(+to)+V2(+N2)" pattern in English and Chinese in this thesis is carried out within the framework of Minimalist Approach. First,my research is limited to both English and Chinese sentences with the "V1+N1 (+to)+V2(+N2)" pattern and from the semantic point,N1 is the subject of V2.Then, the previous studies are introduced, such as Quirk's,Radford's,Chomsky's,Lasnik & Saito's,Wang Li's and Xing Xin's,etc. After this, the detailed theoretical basis for the thesis is given, including the VP-internal subject hypothesis,VP shell theory and Object agreement projection under the framework of which the relationships between V1 and N1,N1 and "V2(+N2)" are analyzed. Both in English and in Chinese, when N1 is the object of V1,there must be a PRO before "V2(+N2)" because of theθ-criterion.The PRO is the subject of"V2(+N2)" and is controlled by N1.Here V1 is called OC verb.At this time, the PRO moves to spec-IP to be checked by null case to and V1 checks N1's objective case.In English, when N1 is not the object of V1,it is the subject of "V2(+N2)".N1 has to be raised to the spec-AgrOP to get its case checked and V1 here is called Raising verb.At this time,N1 first moves to spec-IP and cannot check its objective case with caseless to,but has to be raised to the spec-AgrOP to get its case checked. In Chinese, when N1 is not the object of V1,it is also the subject of "V2(+N2)".It has to be raised to the spec-IP position to be exceptionally checked by V1 and here V1 is called ECM verb.In this case,N1 first moves to the position of spec-IP,but cannot be checked by caseless to and its objective case can only be exceptionally checked by the preceding verb V1.This research, although not perfect, offers a comparative detailed syntactic explanation for the "V1+N1(+to)+V2(+N2)"pattern in English and Chinese.
