Northeast China has always been an important region for the imperialists to seize. At the turn of the century, Russian imperialist tried to control the far-east area and Japan also decided to control Northeast China under the Continent Policy. Thus the two countries contested fiercely in this region. After the September 18th Incident of 1931, in order to take advantage of Northeast China to tie down Japan, Soviet Union was active to repair Sino-Soviet relations. Meanwhile, Soviet Union also moderated her relations with Japan by adopting the "non-interference" Policy so that she can avoid an engagement with Japan. But the recognition of Manchukuo State (1932-1945) which was Japan's puppet and the selling of the Chinese Eastern Railway did incalculable harm to Chinese sovereignty and national interests. After the July 7th Incident of 1937, the extensive invasion of the fascist Japan posed a direct threat to Soviet Union's own interest, which promoted her to provide Chinese army and people with material aid and moral support. At the end of the Second World War, the favorable international situation urged Soviet Union to participate in the Pacific War in return for her interest in Czarist Russia.Soviet Union's foreign policy was determined by her own nature and interest, which promoted Soviet Union to pursue a pragmatic diplomacy. Herpolicy toward Northeast China was especially complex and repeated——sometimes support and sympathize, sometimes opposite and destroy. Basing on the historical facts during this period, this dissertation tries to interpret the evolution of Soviet Union's policy toward Northeast China as well as its deep-seated reasons and historical inevitability. At the same time, it also reveals its impact and role in China's war of resistance against Japan.
