Earth Site, containing a wealthy of historical and cultural information, and with important historical, scientific and artistic value, is a kind of very valuable heritage. However, it is vulnerable to be damaged because of its non-mobile nature and its soil form fully or mainly. As one of the world's most ancient nations, Chinese has created a very brilliant human civilization and left many Earth sites. Now, the majority of Earth sites have been damaged in different degree, even some of them have been disappeared due to its soil nature, the long-term impact of the surrounding environment, natural disasters and human destruction. Heritage conservation workers are facing the important task that how to implement the effective protection and management.Geographic Information System, as the special technology of dealing with spatial data, is suitable for information collection, management, analysis and display of various sites. It is of great significance to establish the Geographic Information System of Earth Site. It can provide some information of the existing earth sites, provide heritage workers and experts some decision-making basis of research and protection. Also, the public can use it to enquire and retrieve some information to meet their needs of travel, study and work.Based on the analysis of GIS and its role in Earth Site management and protection, according to the user requirements, the Geographic Information Systems of Earth Site is implemented through comprehensive utilization of object-oriented approach, design pattern, structure design. The thesis has given detailed exposition of some key technologies in systems design and implementation. The main work and conclusions are as follows:1 Basic information of Earth Site and its protection is briefed, the role of GIS in earth site management and protection is described, and the feasibility and necessity of the establishment of Geographic Information Systems of Earth Site is expounded.2 The main methods and its theoretical foundation of the system establishment are discussed in three aspects: GIS, object-oriented approach, design pattern.3 According to the steps of geographic information systems engineering, the Geographic Information Systems of Earth Site is designed, and its function and performance requirements are explained clearly. The Thematic Classification, the access methods and other relevant information of the Earth Site database is discussed in this thesis, the logical structure and the physical achievement ways are put forward.4 The entire system is designed and realized through a four-story structure model: the expression layer, the business logical layer, the second-components layer and the data access layer. Some of key technologies in the system object design and implementation are discussed in detail.
