An Analysis On The Music Image Of Lulu From The Angle Of Feminism

Written by Austrian composer Alban Berg, Lulu, incomplete opera as it is , is one of the most sophisticated dodecaphonic works as well as Alban's last creation .It thoroughly presents the writer's techniques of composing ,and demonstrates the social background of his days and Berg's own philosophy through the opera . In this opera , Lulu is on the behalf of the "Original image of sexuality" .On the stage, she represents the whore who murders men and the tragedy of a woman who lives in the Patriar-chalorder society. Berg has his deep sympathy for this woman, and succeeds in depicting her fair and fascinating image in the way of music.Feminism music criticism is a branch of "New Musicology" in America. With the influence of feminism, It happened in the area of the creation and criticism of western art and literature as a new way of criticism in the 1960s andl970s. It adopts a new point of view on music to interpret the music works and emphasizes human consideration and meaning research, in addition, it combines music creation with politics, history, race and feminism movements. Thus it has made great progress in recent 30 years.Based on the role of LuLu, this thesis tries to analyse the personal image of LuLu with the thought of feminism, and focusing on the combination of social background , music atmosphere and the life experiences of the role in the play, it tries to understand the historical reasons and human and cultural background, which causes the tragedy of LuLu, as well as to reveal the characteristics of Berg's music composition through the analysis of the music image of LuLu.
