Dunhuang Bianwen is a bridge between the past and the future in Chinese literature and is a link between ancient literature and modern literature, among which Bianwen on history, influenced by the tradition of narration in Shizhuan, Shisao and folk oral performance, tries to narrate the stories of historical figure with alternate prose and rhymed parts for recitation and singing reflecting its unique characteristics of narration and bearing great influence on the forthcoming literature mode. This paper endeavors to conduct a comprehensive and stereo study of Bianwen on history by expatiating the art of narration in Bianwen on history mainly from three aspects like the succession and development of Bianwen on history to the art of narration in fore-Tang Dynasty history, art of poetic narration and art of narration in folk oral performance. The analysis of art of narration in Bianwen on history helps to deepen the understanding of Bianwen on history and the art of narration in Dunhuang Bianwen and helps to better understand its position in the development of Chinese literature. This paper consists of five parts including introduction and body part, etc.The first part is introduction, which firstly explains the grounds to choose this topic and then defines Dunhuang Bianwen. The author puts forward her own opinion on the basis of the study by predecessors and explains the scope of study of this paper. In the review of the status quo of the study of Bianwen on history, the author finds that the study of art of narration in Bianwen on history is insufficient, therefore the author in this part introduces the research findings by predecessors and points out what are researchable. At last this part tells the purpose, method of study and significance of this paper.The second part illustrates the succession and development of Bianwen on history to art of narration in fore-tang dynasty. In regard to the succession and development of Bianwen on history in respect of the narration angle and narration time to art of narration in fore-tang dynasty, there exists no detailed illustration from predecessors, whereas this paper presents emphatic and detailed analysis. This part, on the one hand, borrows foreign theory of narration, on the other hand, standing on the concrete situation of Chinese literature and culture, adopts the theory of narration by Yang Yi and Chen Pingyuan to make an analysis.The third part analyzes the poetic art of narration in Bianwen on history and probes into the influence of the tradition of Shisao on the narration in Bianwen on history, which is a new angle not discussed by predecessors. This part mainly conducts an analysis of the poetic art of narration from the following aspects like the poetic characteristics of the language form in Bianwen on history, quoting and transforming the words in Shisao, artistic conception creating, rich imagination and increasing scenery depiction, etc.The forth part borrows foreign Performance Theory to analyze the art of narration in folk oral performance. It is original to apply foreign performance theory to analyzing Bianwen on history. And it is also a highlighting point of this part to analyze the influence of the match of pictures and variation of voice on art of narration in Bianwen on history by studying and comparing the text of Bianwen on history with existing performance art of similar nature.The last part is conclusion. The interrelated merge and penetration of different styles and elements produces the unique art of narration in Bianwen on history which carries down the experience of previous literature works on the one hand and promotes further development of narration skills in ancient literature works. The narration in Bianwen on history reflects the merge between official written narration in Shizhuan and narration in folk oral performance, the merge between the elegance in Shisao and vulgarity in folk and the merge between narration and lyricism, and sheds lights on the understanding of its important position in the evolution of literature from elegance to vulgarity and its un-negligible value in the transformation of narration mode with an emphasis on the combination of linear and non-linear.
