On Cultural Transfer And College Oral English Teaching

Many of the difficulties the foreign language learners face are imposed by cultural difference. Since people have naturally acquired their native culture in the course of growth and education, they more often than not unconsciously use their native cultural principles, social norms and social linguistic regulations to judge and interpret other side's linguistic behavior while they are communicating with people from different cultural background. This unavoidably contributes to communication failures. Among factors resulting in the failures, cultural transfer arisen from cultural divergence is one of the greatest significance.Starting from intercultural communication, this thesis introduces the theoretical basis of cultural transfer and analyzes evidence from the aspects of surface-structure cultural transfer and deep-structure cultural transfer. In order to probe the situation of culture teaching in Chinese college English teaching, the author exerts a survey to investigate the problems in students'foreign language learning mainly caused by lack of the foreign culture, especially the British and American culture. This research focuses on the causes of cultural transfer.It also has some implications for oral English teaching. Firstly, the study indicates that teachers should integrate culture teaching with language teaching. Secondly, only the stress on teaching methods, the roles of teachers and learners can make the cultural teaching feasible and effective in a real sense. The organic synthesis of the three factors will finally enable the students to understand cultural differences and become competent communicators in intercultural communication.
