Length Approach, put forward by Professor Wang Chuming, is mainly concerned with writing long compositions to improve learners'second language proficiency. It is a task-based, experiential, and write-to-learn approach to foreign language learning, with special attention paid to satisfying learners'affective needs. Its basic assumption is that through manipulation of the length requirement of writing, learners are pushed to write increasingly long compositions, which will help them to reinforce their sense of achievement, boost their confidence in their ability to learn the FL, motivate further learning and ensure progress in FL learning, and eventually transfer foreign language knowledge into foreign language proficiency. As far as college English vocabulary teaching and learning is concerned, both teachers and students have been attaching much more importance to building vocabulary size. However, learners'productive ability has been neglected to some extent. In actual communication, learners always fail to find out appropriate words to express their ideas as a result of lack of output practice. The present study is undertaken to explore the effects of Length Approach on L2 vocabulary learning. There are five chapters in this thesis. In the first part, an overview of current college English vocabulary teaching and learning is presented, mainly focusing on the problems and the causes. Then it mainly deals with the theoretical basis, including elaboration on lexical knowledge from different dimensions, the role that input, output and writing play in vocabulary learning. After that, it presents an introduction to Length Approach, including the teaching ideas and its implementation procedures. In addition, both the methodology and the whole experimental research are reported in great detail. Finally, it discusses the pedagogical implications drawn from the research. This research employs both quantitative and qualitative methods, involving tests, questionnaire and interview. The study yields the following findings: Length Approach exerts a positive effect on L2 vocabulary learning. To be specific, it is effective to raise learners'productive consciousness in vocabulary learning, and to cultivate their vocabulary productive competence. In addition, Length Approach is helpful to enhance learners'comprehensive English proficiency.
