Ballade is European musical style with long history, which is a kind of song based on a certain fixed form of poetry, and its characteristic is narrative content and a writing skill of the polyphonic music. It was developed into the style of balladry until 13C., which became the most popular literary genre in the Romantic period. Since 18C., some composers made use of balladry as lyrics to indite music known as vocal ballade. As one of the greatest romantic composers in the 19C., Chopin, with his incomparable musical talent, released his works from the shackle of words. Based on studying on balladry and vocal ballade, he transplanted balladry to piano works for the first time.Chopin wrote four piano ballades in his whole life. And each of them contained Chopin's inspiration and new attempts. Those ballades have their own characters, while they also integrate with each other. Having great musical expressive force and difficult playing skills, those ballades became classical music which were researched and performed by musicians in the whole world. In the past, some scholars and musicians mainly focused on g Minor Ballade Op.38 and f Minor Ballade Op.52, A Flat Major Ballade Op.47 came next. However, only a few general statements were given to F Major Ballade Op.38, of which the profound values were not dug out yet. Hence, in this thesis, it is our intention that more values of F Major Ballade can be found out based on further research, through which attempt is made to redound to performance.Under the direction of practical and realistic spirit, philological method, comparison method and analytical method were used in this thesis. The main body comprises three chapters. In the first chapter, the production and creative characteristics of Chopin's piano ballades are introduced. In the second chapter, the performing techniques of F Major Ballade are analyzed and its creative characteristics are summarized. In the third chapter, firstly, the annotation for performance of F Major Ballade is made; secondly, dissertation is made about the influence made by its creative characteristics on performance; finally, the influence made by different editions on performance is discussed briefly.Through the analysis of F Major Ballade hereinbefore, the peculiar charming point is dug out, that is to figure two contradicted themes with very terse material in order to achieve strong dramatic conflicts, then use various creative skills to unify the two contradicted themes and safeguard the work's logic and completeness which contribute it to be the most programmatic and descriptive work in all Chopin's ballades. Meanwhile, the analysis of the creative characteristics of F Major Ballade showcases that it has the complete features and spirit of Chopin's ballades.
