Self-disclosure refers to the demonstration of one's feelings and true information to others in the process of contacting with them. Self-disclosure has a great effect on the maintenance and development of close relationship, individual emotional and social adaptability, especially on individual's psychological balance and physical and mental health. Since Humanistic psychologists proposed this concept, many foreign psychologists have done their research from the areas of social psychology, clinical psychology and interpersonal relationships, but domestic researches in this area are very rare. The existed researches aiming at college students mainly explored it from gender, age, grade, and other aspects while they didn't take the specialty into account. In order to understand whether the self-disclosure level is related to their personal qualities, this study investigates 402 university students from Jiangxi Normal University, Jinggangshan University and Taizhou Normal College and tries to reveal the relationship between self-disclosure and gender, specialty and mental health. The research methods include questionnaire survey, literature, expert interviews and mathematical statistics. The results show that: (1) students of different specialties have different level of. self-disclosure. Self-disclosure level of students whose specialty is sports is higher than that of non- sport specialty students. Among them, in terms of sports specialty students, the self-disclosure level of the students engaging in group activity is higher than that of the students engaging in individual activity. (2) Students of different genders have different level of self-disclosure. Boy's self-disclosure is significantly lower than that of girl's. Gender and specialty interaction does not exist. (3) Level of self-disclosure to different targets is different. Disclosure to homosexual friends is the highest, while disclosure to heterosexual friends is the lowest. Disclosure to the mother and father is in the middle level. (4) The mental health of college students has positive correlation with the level of their self-disclosure. Self-disclosure is an important factor that affects mental health of college students.
