The art of film never records the real world in a completely realistic way. It is an optional reflection of people's image and a partial expression of people's perspective. Realistic and unrealistic and surrealistic interaction of the space and the time are presented on the screen. Eventually the subject and object of the value judgment is created. Louis Bunuel(1900—1982), Spanish director, is called the master of the surrealistic film. He is good at depicting the activities in people's subconscious world by creating unrealistic logical senses of seeing and hearing in a setting of realistic life. Bunuel's flims are a kind of contradiction that can never be interpreted with formula. The misinterpretation of his films can not be resolved by the course of the time. The questions and doubt raised for religion and the violation of the traditional moral codes in his films are generally agreed to be the main cause of the controversy. The thesis probes into the Irreconcilable contradictions of Bunuel's mentality and the historical environment and presents that the anxiety and the shock caused by the depiction of the ugly and evil side of human nature in his works is the key to the matter. In the contemporary audile and visual art expression, surrealistic films are far from being the main stream. But the particular elements in Bunuel's films are growingly seen in the film language of those commercially successful movies. Comparing the works with decades in between, it is not difficult to find the similarities and the differences. Surrealism is easily misunderstood as to deliberately show the odd and nihilism world by form of dreams. Bunuel, however, through his films suggests the profound influence of people's subconscience on their real life. Under the surface of his illogical and intuitive techniques lay the profound meaning and exquisite structure. Bunuel's films have evoked heated debate and argument eyerywhere. Now those films all got just and fair appreciation, but this group of people is usually small in unmber. Actually, these films are not grave or bewildering. In comparison of other contemporary films, they all have curious suspense and plot, wit and humour. As for the expression form, Bunuel's films are counter-conventional and unrealistic. The concepts of reality, unreality and surrealism was always overlapped. In fact, comparing to some realistic films, Bunuel's intuitive creation serves better to reveal the essence of the problems behind the reality, thus making the art of film closer to the reality ever since. The thesis brings forward an optimistic perspective about the close distance between the public and Bunuel's films, noting that with the course of the time and the combination of the culture, the potential commercialization elements in Bunuel's films will built a bridge for the public to approach him.
