《on the Road》is the representative work of American writer——Jack Kerouac,for a long time , it has been seen as the portraiture of the Beat Generation`s life. What is called"on the road", is a journey without starting point and terminal point ,it is a person`s suspend condition before he gets his ultimation. Crazy, Rebellion, are most used when people appraise this journey ,but in fact ,they can`t generalize the whole condition of the road, or the writer`s experience. This thesis will put the variation of Jack Kerouac as the key point and it has 5 main parts:1.Why did《on the Road》occurred in the 20th century 50 years? 2.What`s the story in the book? 3.Why did Kerouac write such a book ? 4.What`s the book`s influence? 5.Where`s the outlet?Among these parts, the writer`s changing, contradictory mentality is a kind of clue, the thesis a course of answering the 5 questions above: After the Second World War, the society`s development brought a tremendous depress feeling to the people lived in it, and《on the Road》is a kind of resist to the depress; Besides, the contradiction exsisted in the religion became more fiercely at that time; with the effects of other American writers together, the book came out. In this book, different sections of the road has its own melody, such as escaping from the society, seeking for the freedom, slingking in Zen. At the same time, the writer`s changing, contradictory mentality is the most important thing behindthe road, because if we say the people`s behaviors are a good annotation of the word——"beat", in fact, they are not the best way shaking off the depress and void of the spirit, from this point, Kerouac doesn`t belong to the BG. Although, the youngers in 60 years didn`t realize the differents between Jack an BG, they put the novel as their guider book, so , we got phenomenon in the next 10 years: Student`s motion, Flourishing of the rock music, Sex libration. Although these motions didn`t disperse the void of the spirit spread all over the west world, they gave the vitality which is hard to come by to inflexible society.At last, if we want to solve the problem of the western`s faith crisis, anxious about the status, we have to pay attention to the complementary between the east and west. As a result of this, the philosophy and religion come from east will play a important role in the west world definitely.
