As the representatives of the dao in the pre-Qin period, Laozi and Zhuangzi are the founders of China’s traditional philosophy. Their philosophy emphasizing on the spirit of freedom is the most important part of the Chinese traditional philosophy.Domestic research scholars rarely elaborate Laozhuang’s freedom spirit together. Most of them elaborated Zhuangzi’s freedom conception separately, or discussed it as one part of his life conception, while the freedom spirit of Laozi was rarely been mentioned. Many studies did not even think there was freedom spirit in Laozi’s philosophy. However, in our opinion, Zhuangzi’s philosophical connotation of freedom spirit inherited from Laozi. It can be more complete to elaborate the freedom spirit of Chinese philosophy by elaborating Zhuangzi’s freedom spirit together with Laozi’s.This paper attempts to study the freedom spirit of Taoism to find out the philosophical foundation that Laozhuang’s freedom spirit relied. And make the people of present get rid of excessive pursuit of material but a higher level of spirit by analyzing the content of that philosophy. This paper will elaborate Laozhuang’s freedom spirit through its appearance background, the main content of the freedom spirit, the philosophical foundation it relied, and its impact on future generations.
