The Thesis tries to study the prose in the period of Anti-Japanese War. Different from the previous studies, the thesis looks into these prose from the aspect of the freedom spirit, thus to discover the inner relationship between historical background and the literal development of the prose, and to have a thorough look into the specialty of this literature style in its function of reflecting the freedom spirits. The main part of this thesis is concerned about the detailed analysis of freedom both in personal life and in public politics and of the relationship between the writing and the trend of intellectual-identifying. The analysis includes: how these authors talk about politics in their prose; how to express their desire for the independence of the people and the country; how did the prose in this period deal with the freedom of personal life from the standing point of appraising the freedom; and how to discern the different understanding of the value of freedom between the left-wing and right wing intellectuals. Although different author may have different views about the prose and its function, all of them play an important part in Chinese history in their own ways. To make those analysis, the thesis tries to stick to a basic principle, that is, to break through the traditional research mode of dividing the whole china into three districts: the district of communist party, the district of Kuo Mingdang, and the district of Japanese army, to try to understand the prose of this period in a whole, thus to handle the freedom spirits reflecting in the prose and the character of china of that time.Through these analysis, the thesis endeavors to demonstrate a fact, that is, although there were conflicts between the pursuing for personal freedom and the pursuing for political freedom, the two pursuits could always be found in the prose written by the same writer. It reflects the sound development of western culture upholding freedom spirits in Chinese culture. From a different aspect, just because there was the desire for the freedom, the prose in this period can keep its independent thinking and writing, and can discern the reality outside and inner soul calmly. The different way to pursue freedom in those prose reflects the different efforts and different society ideal of those authors.
