Priming Of Pop-out In Attention Directing That Under Endogenous Cues

The behaviors in our daily life are results of both our experiences and the stimuli in front of us.Priming of pop-out,a phenomenon driven by a kind of implicit and short- term memory,facilitates repeated reactions or inhibits unrepeated reactions.The memory trace of each trial exerts a diminishing effect over the following five to eight trials.Combining eye movement monitoring and event-related potentials(ERPs) recording,we investigate the priming of pop-out caused by the consistency of three kind of features,two of which are features of the endogenous cues(color and direction) and the other is the mode of response(shape of the target).Sixteen colleague students participated in the experiment.At the beginning of each trial,there was a cross at the centre of screen for participant to fixate.After 600 to 800 ms,a color cross(one red arrow and three green arrows or one green arrow and three red arrows) was presented at the centre of the screen,pointing at four white diamonds.Participants were instructed to determine whether the white diamond pointed by the odd—color arrow was cut off on the right or left and respond with the mouse as quickly as possible.There are two kinds of inter stimulus interval(ITI;1500ms and 3000ms).The reaction time,the latency of saccade and the ERPs were recorded as dependent variables.Result indicated that:(1) Changes of the consistency of the three feature all produced priming of pop-out,and the effect caused by different feature takes place in different step of cognitive process;(2) Priming of pop-out is driven by implicit and short-term memory.This kind of trial-to-trial priming is largely immune to passive decay,and that "forgetting" is produced by interference from attentive visual encoding of stimuli in the following trials;(3)Priming of pop-out is a kind of trial-to-trial priming,which is not only caused by the feature that can pop-out;(4) Priming of pop-out is not exclusive,other mechanisms(such as IOR and the gambler's fallacy) make their effects at the same time.
