Screenplay translation has been thriving in China. However, domestic academic research in this field is still scarce, especially in the strategies of treating cultural elements in screen translation. Earlier discussions are mainly based on experience. Taking Nida's "functional equivalence" theory as the judging criterion, this thesis aims at finding out a series of strategies that translators can adopt in dealing with the cultural elements in screen translation in order to provide references for future practitioners and stimulate more academic interest in this field.In this thesis, chapter one is a brief summary of the present research status of screen translation and the important role it plays in the field of translation. Chapter two is a discussion of some particular concepts concerning screen translation, including its definition, history, classification, characteristics and constraints. In Chapter three, the author moves on to discuss the criteria of screen translation through a retrospect of the equivalence theories in the history of translation, among which she thinks Nida's "functional equivalence theory" can serve as the best criteria for judging screen translation. The focus of this study is on the strategies of treating cultural elements in screen translation, as done in chapter four. In this chapter, the relationship between language, culture, and translation is discussed first, and then an analysis of the translation of certain recurrent cultural elements is carried out, such as the translation of cultural images, the translation of swearwords and sex-related expressions, etc. Chapter five concludes this paper. In this chapter, the author emphasizes again the importance of cultural factors in screen translation and restates that the success of film translation should be evaluated with the criterion that the impact of the translated film on the target language audience should be approximately the same as the impact of the original film on the source language audience.
