The"Cultural Turn"in translation studies, following the"Cultural Turn"to the general international academic studies in arts and social sciences has influenced and promoted China's translation studies since 1990s and resulted in great progress in the translation research in the country. In the study of"Cultural Turn", it is seen that translation process can not be separated from cultural interpretation. The process applies to different translators, different social cultures, and the specific analysis for the unique text, to reach the perfect culture communication in text translation in different countries. In this thesis, the author aims to do some research on the translation of emotional cultures in audio-visual subtitle translation based on"Cultural Turn". And for the audio-visual subtitle translation, due to its special features, translating subtitles of English movies and TV shows need to follow some new concepts on subtitle translation besides the traditional translation principles. It is very important to correctly express the literal meaning of one language and the cultural connotation with another language. With the"Cultural Turn"in translation, translation theorists and scholars regard translation not only as a linguistic transfer but more as an act of cultural communication, and their research focused on cultural elements in translation. The American sitcom Friends has been fashionable and popular for nearly ten years. It has been shown in different countries in the world in different languages these years. And it is obvious that it's quite a valuable text for us to study. But most of the researches concentrated on its humor translation. Another important aspect of the translation of a sitcom is the translation of emotional cultures. So this thesis will attempt to focus on the study of the translation of emotional cultures in Friends, for example: the translation of the natural affection, love and friendship. The translation of these elements is closely related to cultural interpretation. And culture which may help foreign audience to understand the cultural connotation of this sitcom plays a quite important role in translation."Cultural Turn"has brought new enlightenment to translation studies. The first chapter of this thesis gives a brief introduction including research significance, definition and methodologies. The second chapter is a literature review which mainly focuses on a careful study of the background and causes of"Cultural Turn"and audio-visual subtitle translation. The third chapter deals with subtitle translation at home and abroad. The fourth chapter will discuss the theoretical framework. Chapter Five is the main body of this paper which is concrete passage translation study of Friends. Chapter Six is conclusion, which presents the finding, limitation and suggestions for further studies. This thesis will use the theoretical analysis and comparative study methodologies. The author will find two different E-C versions to do the passage translation research, and will compare different versions to find things in common based on Functional Equivalence Principle. The study on"Cultural Turn"developed in recent years at home, and it is not very mature. And meanwhile, the entering and spreading of American serials have been new. The study on the translation of Friends in the past focused on humor element based on the dialogue among three heroes and three heroines. And therefore, the attempt of this study on emotional element under the research of"Cultural Turn"is new and challenging. In this research, the author meets some difficulties on the concrete analysis of emotional elements. It will help us to understand the American emotional culture deeper based on some translation principles through theoretical analysis and comparative study.
