Recognition And Reconstruction Of Textual Coherence In Fiction Translation

This thesis explores the recognition and reconstruction of coherence in fiction translation with five parts.It firstly puts forward the model of the shaping process of textual coherence by Zhang Delu in Chapter One, which includes the introduction of the study on cognition and relevance by Ernest-August Gutt, and then to introduce a hypothetic model of translation process by Roger T. Bell in the second chapter. During the translation process in Bell's model, the translator, first as a competent reader and then a rewriter, uses the cognitive and inferential mechanism introduced in the first chapter to deal with the explicit cohesive mechanism and implicit missing links in situational and cultural contexts and to illustrate the model in the analysis of typical examples of fictions from the perspective of literary stylistics, in hope of testing and proving the logicality of the shaping process model of textual coherence and the feasibility of the translation process model. And more importantly, this thesis is aimed to combine the translation process model together with the study on the translation of textual coherence under which the cognition and relevance theory is also included as a constituent part in the shaping process model of textual coherence, and thus make a systemic theoretical study by discussing cases of an inadequately tapped field of stylistic study of fiction translation, finally making some meaningful contributions in translation study.However, due to theoretical complexity in this thesis, the study on literature translation can only be limited to theoretical exploration. And a more comprehensive and thorough study which better integrates more relevant theories on translation need to be done, so as to improve the global view on translation study in terms of theory synthesis and the diversity of case study.
