Common address term is a language element which must be used in interpersonal communication, and one of the important factors that can affect interpersonal relationships. As a social phenomenon, its change is closely related with the times progress and social cultural changes. Especially after the founding of new China, with the formation of new concept, a part of the address terms has been to narrow the scope of use or even disappear, and some of them show a series of tendency of transfer, expansion and generalization.This article is divided into two parts; the first part is general description of the features and functions of common address terms, it discusses the phenomenon and difficulty of the terms mainly from five aspects. First, the phenomenon of generalization: The main purpose and problems of generalization, and the difficulties need to be resolved. Second, the missing links: the dilemma on choosing address terms, and the historical and cultural reasons of using them nowadays. Third, the dissipation: the extensity, timeliness, convenience and multiformity of the dissipation. Fourth, the ultra-conventional use: function, characteristics and causes. Fifth, the kinship terms: the socio-cultural phenomenon with Chinese characteristics, the traditional Chinese cultural awareness, and the impact of western culture.The second part is about the address terms using nowadays. It is divided into ten parts to discuss the history and current situation of each address term and status of language. This kind of address terms are few in number, such as Miss, Sir, Comrade, master, Mrs., teacher, aunt, uncle etc.This paper takes "Miss" for example, discusses the meaning of "Miss" through the whole process. In Chinese, as an address term, "Miss" has a long history. But the multiple connotations have aroused much controversy. It is still sensitive to decide how to call an unfamiliar young lady when go shopping, dining or ask for directions."Miss" includes four parts: First, the evolution. Second, the missing links problem. Third, the universal and regional usage of "Miss". Fourth, the summary. This paper analyzes and investigates some other address terms as well. Based on the analysis and research of current situation of address terms used nowadays, this paper deals with the features and functions of the terms in order to help strangers, particularly between foreigners and Chinese people better communicate with each other, and promote interpersonal relationships.
