Qin (also named Yaoqin, Guqin or Qixianqin), with a long history, is one of the oldest plucking stringed instruments in China. Its peak period appeared during the Han Wei and Six Dynasties (206 B.C– 589 A.C), when it had great development on production, shape and structure, articulation, melodies and theories, and its new music functions were advanced. Nine odes to Qin composed during this period pictured Qin, which were of high value of research on music history. Based on research on these odes to Qin and other related materials, this essay makes an introduction on the derivation, production, shape and structure, articulation, performance techniques, performance forms, melodies, and players, and a comprehensive comment on the development and influence of Qin during the Han Wei and Six Dynasties in terms of aesthetics and functions by means of bibliography searching, analyzing and comparing, in order to give a picture of Qin as true as possible.
