Zuofen born in Linzi of Shandong, who was the sister of the great poet Zuosi, was a Wei-Jin period outstanding female literary talent, the imperial concubine of Emperor Wu of the West Jin Dynasty. Her literature was outstanding and she was famous for her poetry. Her appearance was ugly. It was very different from the others who were selected into Palace because of their beauty. Zuofen was selected by completely her literary talent. Her family was poor, but her families advocated Confucian from generation to generation. Her father's position was not high in the court, but was good at writing and with high literary accomplishments. Good family cultural atmosphere helped Zuofen to be culturally nurtured from childhood. The brother and sister showed their literature talent very early, and Zuofen was elected into Palace because of this.Zuofen's entering the palace changed her and her family member's destiny. The brother and sister's sentiment was deep, after Zuofen entered the palace, although it was near at hand, actually they cannot meet, they could only communicate by means of the correspondence. Zuosi wrote "Mourning as a gift to younger sister Poem", Zuofen replied "Feeling to Poem", the brother and sister's pain of the lovesickness appeared gloriously on the paper. The brother and sister's personality was congenial, indifferent to fame or wealth, and their personality was noble and pure independent. Zuosi was very talented, and his achievements in the literary had an impact on Zuofen. Zuofen's many works expressed the life feeling, the imperial grounds life's disaffection, and the interest which the expression remained pure and incorruptible. Her poetry language received Zuosi's concise article style, and the sentiment was sincere. The brother and sister shared the honor by the literature. But simultaneously Zuofen also affected Zuosi. When Zuofen entered the palace, Zuosi left along with it and moved into Luoyang, this had created the good condition for his creating of the famous "Poetic Essay on Three Cities". Afterward Zuosi joined Jia Mi's "24 Friends", which was also for her younger sister's reason. After Zuofen died, Zuosi also withdrew from the government, and spent life almost in seclusion.Because Zuofen's appearance was ugly, she did not receive Emperor Wu's favor. She was Emperor Wu's secretary, and was his article toy seeking for reputation. Many of her works were responding to call. Her works may fall into four categories according to the content: First, displaying the brother and sister sentiment, and expressing sentiment of missing each other, such as "Feeling Leaves Poem". Second is the performance of imperial life, expressing the depressed sentiment, such as "Left Feeling Poetry", this poetic essay did not look like the beforehand palace resentful poems writing much "treats near looks at the good fortune" the bosom, taking waiting as supreme honor, expressing losing resentment of the favor, but by "separating the very close relative" to hate, founded the palace resentful literature new theme model, is the rare high quality works. Third, chanting the thing to express the interest, such as "Calligraphy Stroke Wooden Poem". Fourth, singing the praises work, such as "Ten thousand Year Princess Eulogy". The artistic feature of Zuofen's works was the plain poetry language and sincere sentiment. The poetry praised true sentiment of the eulogy, and the language was elegant, the literary elegance was simple and beautiful.The ideological values of Zuofen's works are embodied in the two main aspects: First, mold the unique life and the emotion feminine image and reflect the feminine independence awareness of consciousness. Second, express the feudal ethics and rite attack.Zuofen's literature in the ancient history of the women status was high. The diversion forms, and rich subject of her poem, the poetry and other works, had demonstrated her literary talent and the skills, and had affected the later generation greatly. The more important is that Zuofen's works conveyed the female consciousness and that had been handed down for generations of fame. She was noble and independent, stood aloof from the world and attacked darkness, yearned for the freedom. Zuofen, who had the strength of spirits, received posterity's admiring and respects.
