Western Marxism is both an ideological and cultural concept,which takes its shape and develops among various literary criticism theories.As the representative of Western Marxism in Britain,Terry Eagleton occupies great reputation in the West.Since the 1980s,his works had been introduced into China.In 1997,his aesthetic work The Ideology of the Aesthetic was translated by three translators:Wang Jie(王杰),Mai Yongxiong(麦永雄) and Fu De'gen(傅德根).After its being published,it attracts attention from the domestic scholars.The thesis focuses on the acceptance and deviations of the Chinese version of The Ideology of the Aesthetic in domestic academic field.In the first chapter,the translation theories of ideology and patronage,Edward Said's 'traveling theory' and the researches of Terry Eagleton's works will be introduced.In addition,the methodology and the contributions of this thesis will be briefly introduced.In the second chapter,the thesis analyzes the acceptance and deviations of the Chinese version of Terry Eagleton's The Ideology of the Aesthetic.The analysis of the acceptance and deviations will be discussed from the angles of 'translation of terms', 'translation of discourses','translation of sentence structures' and 'addition and deletion'.During the process,translator's acceptance and deviations of Terry Eagleton's The Ideology of the Aesthetic will be interpreted by applying such translation theories as translator's subjectivity,poetics,ideology and patronage.In the third chapter,the acceptance and variations of eight keywords in The Ideology of the Aesthetic will be examined.The investigation covers their connotations and denotations in the Western context;after their being introduced into China,the domestic scholars reform and appropriate them and they consequently suffer from variations.In the fourth chapter,the thesis comes to its conclusion.By summing up the thesis, the author reasserts the acceptance and deviations of the Chinese version of The Ideology of the Aesthetic.Furthermore,the author presents his rethinking of the localization of 'the aesthetic ideology' in China.In addition,the author discusses the limitations and the questions to be further researched by the thesis as well.The thesis can be helpful to study the translatology of The Ideology of the Aesthetic in China.Based on the collection and classification of materials,the thesis explores the acceptance and deviations of The Ideology of the Aesthetic in China through close reading and analysis of the text.In addition,the examination on the variations of 'alienation','commodity fetishism','hybridity','heterogeneity','defamiliarization', 'identity','cultural hegemony' and 'modernity' in The Ideology of the Aesthetic can provide a new perspective for the study of Western Marxism and Cultural Studies in China.
