Terry Eagleton is a British literary theorist and literary critic, while he is also an active Marxist.Being a Marxist, it is significant for Eagleton. Actually, Eagleton’s political stand and political goal is in close connection with his academic research.The thesis focuses on Eagleton’s identity of Marxist, which can help people have a deeper understanding of Eagleton and his writings. The thesis mainly contains there parts as below:With the viewpoint of history and society, the first chapter introduces Eagleton’s theoretical change of Marxism. The duty of intellectuals and the surroundings has an impact on Eagleton’s change. British New Left is the production of western Marxism, and the New Left means a lot for Eagleton.The second chapter analyses Eagleton’s books concretely, trying to emphasize Eagleton’s political identity. His goals, studying methods and conclusions of his works are considered carefully. Eagleton’s books are not only the tools to rebroadcast Marxism, but also the sword and shield to protect Marxism.The third chapter tries to illustrate that how Eagleton is been accepted by Chinese readers and Chinese scholars. In the beginning, Eagleton is not been considered as a Marxist. Some years later, people start to have an interest in Eagleton’s political opinions.
