Silk String Quintet is a new genre of Chinese national chamber music, established by Mr. Hu Dengtiao of Shanghai conservatory of music in the middle of last century. In this genre, the composer combined Chinese traditional small-sized ensemble music with the techniques of western string quintet, with the employment of five distinct string musical instruments, which help exert adequately such qualities of national musical instruments as tone color and skills etc., and hence enormously enrich the expressivity of national musical instruments. This genre originate from and transcend national tradition, which draws world-wide attention from music circles.This thesis attempts to make multi-directional analysis and study of Mr. Hu's Silk String Quintet from a macro angle, which includes 4 chapters to give considerably elaborate and detailed account of the development of it, from the establishment to the heyday. The article starts with analysis of Silk String Quintet works, to give a all-round and systematic interpretation of Mr. Hu's composing language and philosophy as well as its historic significance and value. The first chapter recalls the historic origin and development of Silk String Quintet. The second chapter elaborates on the relation between Mr. Hu and Silk String Quintet, covering his composing background, process, philosophy, and gives analysis to some Silk String Quintet work from various aspects of structure, texture and tone color. Chapter three demonstrate the instruction of national musical instruments and performing groups relating to the existence and reservation of Silk String Quintet. And gives an all-round summary of the historic significance and status of Silk String Quintet.Thesis study bears great importance to Mr. Hu and the existence of Silk String Quintet. This study of the issue offers valuable academic resources to not only the national music department of SCM, but also the current study of Mr. Hu's music in SCM.
