Zhao Yuanren, a well-known linguist and composer in China, is the earliest composer using the western compoing techniques to compose Chinese music. His exploration and innovation has made a tremendous contribution to the development of Chinese art songs. He treated Chinese music and Western music with objective, scientific, developmental attitudes, and thought that though the Western music was advanced than Chinese national music, the Chinese national music had its own excellent traditions. We should assimilate useful parts of the western music on the basis of preserving and developing the national music, constructing the modern folk music with a Chinese character. He insisted on making full use of the "May 4th" spirit, and was the first composer who had created the "new poetry collection" with colloquialism. He payed important attentation to the social and educational function of music, treating the social life as his composing materials, expressing his attention the social and personal life through music Zhao Yuanren has also focused on enhancing the innovation and artistic in the composing music, in order to promote the Chinese art songs composing to a new historical stage.This dissertation analyzes and summarizes the music theories of Zhao Yuanren, combining many of his views with the composing technique of the art songs. The author wants to summarize his musical thoughts from the macroscopic theories to the specific application of technique, so that people can profoundly and completely understand Zhao Yuanren's excellent contributions Chinese art songs composing.
