Pope Clementâ…ªannounced the new breve to stop the Catholic missmaries keeping the Chinese Rites in China in 1704, but Emperor Kangxi asked the missionaries should respect the Chinese Rites if they wanted to continue their missionary work in China. Carlo Tommaso Maillard de Tournon was sent to stop the disputes between the different Catholic missions in China. As Kangxi showed much concern on this event, he sent many Jesuits as his envoys to Rome between 1706 and 1707. P. Joseph-Antoine Provana, as the the only Jesuit envoy who successed the mission from Kangxi to Rome, played a very important role in this event. This paper tries to take a textual research on Provana's mission with full use of Chinese European archives, and to have a discussion on the communication between Kangxi, Portugueses and Pope. Thus, we could also have a better understanding on the encounters and experiences of missionaries in different missions during the rough time.
