Pin Di entered the field of literary criticism under the influence of the system of evaluating political talents in the Six Dynasties. From the Pre-Qin days to the Six Dynasties, Chinese literary criticism developed through three phases in direct line of succession: Confucianist ideal that literature intends to convey the Tao, the interaction between Heaven and Man in the Han Dynasty and the relation between Man's talents and his nature in the Six Dynasties. In the last phase, Critics saw Man and his works illustrating each other so as to deepen the understanding of Man as an artist and his works instead of only commenting on the latter. In addition, the involvers in literary criticism selected sentences and essays according to the aesthetics of the Six Dynasties, anticipating a prosperous application of Pin Di to literary criticism. The thesis compares Pin Di of Ranks of Poetry to Pin Di evaluating painting and calligraphy which also originated in the Six Dynasties without concluding which one is the best and, thus, tries to cognize the nature of literature. Pin Di applied to the evaluation of painting and calligraphy enjoys universality; applied to the evaluation of poetry high operationalization.
