With a relatively stable political power,developed economy and prosperous culture,the Han Dynasties was a prosperous and flourishing period in Chinese history.In terms of the development of the art of calligraphy,the calligraphy in the Han Dynasties inherited from Qin Dynasties and followed by the Wei and Jin Dynasties.At that time,various calligraphy styles developed simultaneously,such as the seal character,the official script,the running script and the cursive script.Different Kinds of calligraphy carriers were found including bamboo slips,stones,steles,etc.In short,the calligraphy in Han Dynasties,which inherited past traditions and broke new grounds for the future,was an important transitional period in the history of Chinese calligraphy.This paper will investigate,analyze and interprets the art of calligraphy in Han Dynasties,including the reasons for the development and prosperity of it,the basic calligraphy theories as well as the change of characters on carriers such as stones and bamboo slips.From the aesthetic perspective,the author also aims at exploring the evolution of the art of calligraphy,the education of calligraphy,and the aesthetic thoughts of famous calligraphers in Han Dynasties,and indicating some aesthetic features of the calligraphy on both bamboo slips and stones,in order to give an in-depth and comprehensive elaboration of the art of calligraphy in Han Dynasties.This paper is divided into the following parts.In the first part,the author mainly introduces the significance of the topic and some basic research ideas and objectives,and also gives a literature review of some previous studies.The second part,aimed at exploring the reason why the art of calligraphy became a conscious aesthetic pursuit in the Han Dynasties,analyzes how the calligraphy art flourished in the Han Dynasties,and introduces how calligraphy education thrived,how calligraphers promoted it,how the theories were formed,and how the structure of characters were established.It is necessary to grasp the development of calligraphy art in the Han Dynasties as a whole,so as to better explore the aesthetic spirit of calligraphy art in Han Dynasties.The third part gives a detailed analysis of the famous calligraphers and calligraphy aestheticsthought in Han Dynasties.The author introduces three calligraphers,Cui Yuan,Cai Yong and Zhao Yi,who had a significant contribution to the art of calligraphy,and the aesthetics contained in their theories,in order to strengthen the understanding of the art of calligraphy in the Han Dynasties from the aesthetic level.The main aim of the fourth part is to explore the change and development of the calligraphy on bamboo slips in Han Dynasties.With the analysis of bamboo slips and other text materials,the author not only makes efforts to have a deeper and clearer understanding of the origin of the characters,but also explores the profound aesthetic value of the calligraphy on bamboo slips,and its irreplaceable influence on the contemporary China calligraphy.The fifth part introduces the calligraphy on stones,and gives an appreciation and aesthetic interpretation of some related unearthed materials.The change from ancient text to the present text is a long-term process of evolution.The Eastern Han Dynasties witnessed the great changes of the times,and the calligraphy on stones at that time provided valuable materials for people to understand those changes.From the perspectives of both Chinese characters and the art of calligraphy,the author tries to study the shape changes of characters in the official script in the Han Dynasties..Based on a detailed analysis of the characters on steles in Han Dynasties,on the one hand,the author explores the social and cultural background of the development of steles in Han Dynasties;on the other hand,the author reveals the aesthetic characteristics of stele calligraphy by analyzing the law of development of Chinese characters.
