With the development of linguistics, psychology and pedagogy, people are taking a new look at foreign language teaching, and grammar is also endowed with a new meaning, which reflects on a new linguistic conception. This new conception regards language not merely as a system of rules, but a tool for human communication. And accordingly, the traditional methods of teaching grammar should be reformed and communicative approach is advocated. With the emergence of new teaching approaches, the traditional teaching methods, especially grammar teaching, are being questioned. Although the traditional grammar teaching methods have ever helped a large number of linguists achieve a lot, the drawbacks of them force us to reconsider them. In historical aspects and that of language acquisition, the importance of grammar teaching is unchallengeable. Its role changes from the dominant position to the subordinate one. It is obvious that, the challenge we are facing is to teach grammar more effectively rather than to decide on whether to teach grammar or not. Communicative Language Teaching, which emerged in the 1970s, and became popular in language teaching, revealed the language's social function and the goal and nature of foreign language teaching. Fostering the communicative competence is the central goal. To some extent, it helps to make a remedy to the traditional teaching approaches. The present thesis analyses the role of grammar, the principle of grammar, the process of acquiring grammar and the features, principles, advantages and disadvantages of Communicative Language Teaching. And how teachers successfully conduct grammar teaching by combining language forms and functions and have students take an active part in the meaningful communicative activities, thus acquiring grammar in the use of language. The author advocates integrating Communicative Language Teaching with grammar teaching into a more effective way. In the thesis, the author makes a comparison between the traditional teaching approaches and the integrated method. Additionally, she gives some examples to prove the possibility of the integration. The discussion on some factors affecting the implementing the integration is made as well.
