Communicative approach corresponds to the trend of the development of education for its advantages and novelty,and has great influence on learners' communicative competence.Grammar translation method has been long applied,and it is suitable for the current situation of education in China.Domestic and foreign researches on the two methods are relatively complete on theoretical discussion and teaching practice,but insufficient on method improvement,especially on the combination of the two methods.In other words,researches on the combination of the two methods mostly focus on grammar teaching rather than applying translation methods to promoting communicative teaching.Besides,major research object is undergraduates' and postgraduates' communicative competence of foreign language rather than high school students' communicative competence of foreign language.And there are few empirical researches,mainly focusing on learners' oral communicative competence rather than written communicative competence.The research aims to reconsider combining communicative approach with grammar translation method which emphasizes linguistic competence,and to strengthen teaching of translation techniques,sentence types and English practical writing rather than restricted to grammar teaching,in order to facilitate high school students to enhance linguistic competence and communicative competence at the same time.Therefore,three research questions will be specified as follows:(1)What is the effect of communicative approach combined with grammar translation method on high school students' communicative competence of foreign language?(2)What is the effect of communicative approach combined with grammar translation method on high school students' written communicative competence of foreign language?(3)What is the effect of the improved teaching mode on improving high school students' written communicative competence of foreign language?Based on the Input Hypothesis,the Output Hypothesis and the Theory of Communicative Language Ability,the research builds the theoretical foundation of the effect of communicative approach combined with grammar translation method on high school students' communicative competence of foreign language.In the research,a nine-week contrastive teaching experiment was conducted among fifty-eight high school students of grade one,divided into two groups,to investigate their written communicative competence of foreign language through the questionnaire of communicative sensitivity and the communicative language test,and the descriptive analysis and the Paired-samples T Test were made in virtue of SPSS,the version of 20,to compare the performance of the two groups and to reflect the effect of the improved communicative approach on high school students' communicative competence of foreign language,mainly on written communicative competence.According to the contrastive analysis,here are the findings:(1)Communicative approach combined with grammar translation method can efficiently enhance high school students' communicative competence of foreign language,which can be analyzed from the significant increase in test scores and the improvement of classroom communication.(2)Communicative approach combined with grammar translation method can efficiently enhance high school students' written communicative competence of foreign language,which can be analyzed from the significant increase in test scores,more fluent and accurate written expressions and better performance in finishing homework and exams.(3)The improved teaching mode can efficiently enhance high school students'written communicative competence of foreign language,the reasons of which can be analyzed from full consideration of their level of English and the current situation and goals of English language teaching in senior high school,and the combination of advantages of communicative approach and grammar translation method.The research is an empirical research on the effect of the improved communicative approach that combined with teaching of translation techniques and sentence types in grammar translation method on high school students' communicative competence of foreign language,mainly on written communicative competence,and will form feasible teaching contents,methods and mode.
