The ultimate goal of foreign language teaching is to cultivate and enhance students' communicative competence. Examining our teaching and learning reality in the light of this goal, we find that we still have a long way to go. As a matter of fact, there exist some problems in English language teaching in China, particularly in English grammar teaching, which is an integral part of English language teaching. Therefore, it is deemed quite necessary and very important to conduct research into and carry out reforms in English grammar teaching.This thesis is intended to explore how to teach English grammar effectively in vocational schools. Many aspects of grammar and grammar teaching are analyzed. First, the concept of grammar is recognized from the perspective of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). Then, the role, the purpose, and the status quo of grammar teaching are expounded and its problems exposed before its necessity and importance are emphasized. Next, Communicative Approach (CA) is discussed at length and the relationship between grammar teaching and CA explained so as to suppose that it is an appropriate and effective method to teach English grammar by applying CA in vocational schools. After that, a number of classroom communicative activities are presented to demonstrate how to teach English grammar by adopting CA in vocational schools. Finally, accounts and analyses of a one-term experiment are provided to further confirm the supposition. The conclusion arrived at is: CA can be effectively applied to English grammar teaching in vocational schools, for it is proved to be capable of producing better results than by way of the traditional method.This study is expected to enrich the theory of foreign language teaching, to promote the quality of English grammar teaching in vocational schools, and to help students master grammatical knowledge more effectively so that they may improve their linguistic communicative competence.
