| As an indispensable part in news, sports news headline boasts its distinctive characteristics besides the general characteristics that all types of news headlines have, such as using simple sentences, omissions and rich rhetoric devices, etc. Meanwhile, it requires a certain cultural background as well as sports knowledge. In this view, based on first-hand examples from sports news headlines, this paper firstly probes into the linguistic characteristics of sports coverage on the aspects of lexicon, grammar, rhetoric and structures. Then it is to indicate the particular trend in English sport news headline: militarization and its metaphor basis as well as the psychological basis. After making a through comparison between the Chinese and English news headlines, the author, in the latter part, tells the translatability and untranslatability in English sports news headlines and suggests some approaches to proper translating of English sports news headlines into Chinese under the of principles of some translation theories with the core of Dynamic Equivalence. .
