| Sport has become an indispensable part in people's life and is gaining increasing attention worldwide. As a major source for the public to learn more about sports, sports news also plays a most significant role in today's news media, taking up one of the three mainstay news departments. Sports journalistic English is a writing style that demonstrates both the common features of news writing at large and its own distinctive characteristics, i.e. simple structure, large amount of short words, new words as well as terminologies, and the humorous language style.This thesis comprises four chapters. In Chapter One and Chapter Two, the author gives an introduction to English sports news as well as its grammatical features and language styles. In chapter Three, the author analyzes the existing problems in the translating of sports news. And in Chapter four, the author proposes specific translation methods of sports news.Compared with that of literature translation, the study of sports news translation is still in its infancy and it has posed problems at different levels due to various factors. In this paper, the author tries to give a detailed account of the linguistic features of English sports news, and meanwhile digs into the possible causes leading to mistranslation. Finally, based on translation theories and practical examples, the author attempts to offer some workable methods and strategies to be applied in the practice of English sports news translating. This paper aims at offering some help to the better appreciation of English sports news, and inviting more valuable opinions in its translation efforts.
