The rapid development and wide acceptance of intercultural communication have made the development of students'intercultural communication competence an important goal of foreign language teaching. Recently, the cultural turn in translation studies has made people aware that translation by its nature is intercultural communication. Therefore, intercultural competence should be a part of translation competence and should be taught in the translation classroom. Many translation textbooks have been released since the adoption of reform and opening-up policies in China. Most, however, are similar in both content and form, lacking innovation and sensitivity to the present needs of learners. Moreover, translation textbook studies have been ignored by most researchers. This thesis briefly summarizes the popular translation textbooks in China with their features and weaknesses, and examines cultural translation and intercultural communication theories. With the guidance from these two theories, the thesis argues for the composition of translation textbooks from the perspective of intercultural communication and ventures to offer some feasible suggestions on composing IC translation textbooks. The thesis consists of five chapters: Introduction is to explain the research background, significance of the study and the organization of the thesis. Chapter Two is a brief survey of existing translation textbooks in China, discussing their strengths and weaknesses. Chapter Three clarifies translation as an activity of intercultural communication and that intercultural communication competence is a component of translation competence. Chapter Four, the key part of the thesis, analyzes the main aspects of composing IC translation textbooks and offers detailed suggestions. Chapter Five summarizes the main ideas of this thesis, pointing out the major findings of this study and recommending future research possibilities.
