When translating prose works, we should try to express the inward beauty of the original works. Much has been done in transferring the formal external beauty of prose works, but it is of greater importance to transfer the inward beauty. Guided by the theories of Chinese-English translation, translation aesthetics and mood theory, mainly based on the exemplary materials from Selected Modern Chinese Prose Writings (Rendered into English by Zhang Piji) by Shanghai Foreign Education Press, this thesis analyzes the difficulties in transferring the mood beauty of Chinese modern prose and offers some feasible ways to transfer the mood beauty. When translating Chinese modern prose works,we must take into account the relation between subjectivity and objectivity and emphasize the combination of subjectivity and objectivity, mergence of emotion and scene. The theory of mood demands that translators pay attention to dualism of subjectivity and objectivity; in the west, they emphasize expressing objectivity through subjectivity, while in China, the order is reversed. Different guiding principles determine that translators should take different measures. The factor of Chinese culture also deserves our attention, which influences the reception of the rendered writings. Moreover, translators must compete with writers in imagination; without smart insight and inspiration, one cannot give a satisfactory version. What is most important is that one must express the inward beauty of the original works. Otherwise, readers cannot get artistic appreciation and perceive the mood beauty of Chinese modern prose. To make the translated version beautiful in mood, we should be familiar with the expressive forms of combination of subjectivity and objectivity in English and Chinese, and find access to translating them. Creating mood through diction, reproducing the aesthetic effect of Chinese fuzzy expressions, giving reasonable explanations, adopting English idioms or set phrases and reproducing beautiful rhythms and vivid images are some feasible ways to transfer mood beauty of Chinese modern prose. Meanwhile, one must consider the aspects of Chinese culture, philosophy, psychology, history, etc.
