As an ancient folk art, Hehuang shadow play is mainly to spread in eastern agricultural area of Qinghai Province with Chinese and local minority nationalities' cultures. Based on the interviewing to the shadow players Zhang Zhanbao of Huzhu County and Zhou Banghui of Datong County in Qinghai and their shadow play groups, guided by Oral- Formulaic Theory and Theory of Performance, the author is to make systematic research about the process for making puppets, arias, expressions and formulaic Performance. Then according to hand-written copies from fieldwork and some other theory books and papers, the author is to find out the art characteristics of Hehuang shadow play, and to know more about Hehuang folk groups' spirit cultures and their needs.Seen from the performance modality, Hehuang shadow players depends on a series of formulaic tale mode, librettos, arias and performance to describe the typical scenes detailedly by artistic performance, and to mode similar and vivid fingers, and also to show up the scene that something rings a bell but is not similar totally.And seen from the content, Hehuang shadow play mainly performs myth stories and historic heroes and legend stories. The whole performing process indicates such theory that man is an integral part of nature with "natural worship" and "gods worship" of local people with "Invitation -Amusement-Thanks to God", and such moral concept as to stress loyalty, piety, etiquette, justice, to persuade to do charitable work, and so on.The author thinks that the characteristics of performance of Hehuang shadow play is more closed to formulaic drama performance. It depends on inside match among players to carry out the emergent and creative quality of performance between the player and his aspects. Each performance is a creative one under the characteristic context. Folklore activities in Hehuang area are the basis of existence and development for Hehuang shadow play. Meanwhile, the content and the modality of Hehuang shadow play fully indicate the local folklore phenomena, they are important carrying tools for local folklore activities and important parts of local people' cultural life. It becomes one of the methods and paths to express village faith and to carry out education of the clan. In view of the present development situation of Hehuang shadow play ,folk arts' succession and reproduction is a problem which is needed paying much more attentions to thinking over deeply.
